This is a list of movies released since the year 1960 that I know ( because I have watched them) or I believe ( 'cause I've read about them but not seen them...yet?) have shots of model ships in them. I will be adding to this list from time to time as my research progresses, so this page is always under construction. Please let me know (using the comment system) of any I have might have missed, particularly from European and Japanese films of which I know very little about and would like to know a great deal more.
Clicking on any link will take you to the page for that title. No link means I haven't done that title yet.

With regard to the submarine Seaview's diving bell used in the movie "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" (1961) and I presume also in the following tv series of the same name...

On page 303:
"1121. Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea
miniature “Apple One” diving bell.
(Irwin Allen Prod., 1961) Vintage original
model miniature diving bell constructed
of cast metal and repurposed existing
components assembled and highly detailed
with light sconces, portals, grab-bar
ladders, rails and other features. The model
is primarily an orb affixed to a conical
base. The entire construction is expertly
studio painted in yellow with black base
and central black stripe with white hand
lettering reading, “NIMR” on either side of
the bell’s door. The model measures 6.75 x 7
in. Highly visible in multiple episodes of the
underwater Sci-Fi series. Exhibiting some
missing piece including the hatch door and
paint chipping, age and wear. In vintage
good condition. $7,000 - $9,000"
Entry includes one photo of the model and a film still.
Going by the trailer, the Disney Summer Movie, 'The Boatniks' which dates from 1970 has some underwater model footage of a minisub in it. From what can be seen in the trailer it looks to be a miniature in a fish tank.
ReplyDeleteHere is a link to the trailer on YouTube

Wikipedia has a pretty good plot summary.

Have you seen the WW2 series "World on Fire"? In the trailer, there is a brief shot of something that sort of looks like a Tribal class destroyer. I'm not sure if it's a miniature or CGI.
ReplyDeleteAfter looking at the trailer I would say it is almost certainly CG, but thanks for the head's up.
ReplyDeleteThe question is. Now the mandalorian is making models of space ships.... should these also be mentioned in this lsit?
ReplyDeleteIf this list was for spaceships then yes, but its a list for ships that travel on or under a body of water on the planet earth so probably not. While I am a massive model spaceship nut and have thought about doing a modelspaceshipsinthecinema blog I felt that subject was already well catered for online by others, though not quite as comprehensively as I would like.
DeleteOne film you might want to check out is 1975's 'The Wind and the Lion' it's a John Milius film that's loosely based on some actual historical events. From the clips available on YouTube there might be some model US warships in it, then again it could be painted backgrounds.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the suggestion. I had a look at The Wind and The Lion and there are no model ships employed in the production. The only shots with ships in them, in this case the American fleet, are a matte paintings by Matthew Yuricich of Tangiers harbor. Look at this page down near the bottom.
